Thank you to the hand-holders
Our son, Zander, arrived in 2014 and was born at 28+2 weeks weighing just 730g (1lb 9oz). As first-time parents, we had absolutely no idea what a rollercoaster ride parenthood (and preemie parenthood at that!) was going to be.
Almost six years on, it continues to be a rollercoaster: big inclines when you wonder if you will ever reach the top, and tummy flips and relief when you make it over another loop. There have been many people on our journey who have provided the hand to hold on those inclines, and held on tight over those loops and out the other side....
Dear Dr Menon
Thank you for your honesty and support in the days leading up to Zander’s arrival. You truly prepared us for what lay ahead and we are so grateful to have had a tour of the unit before we became residents for 85 days. Thank you for your care of Zander in those initial weeks of intensive care, he wouldn’t be here without you.
Dear INCREDIBLE nurses
I have said so many times before how amazing you all are! Our little boy is so lucky to have had your care, cuddles and comfort. And so are we. Natasha, you made me feel like a real Mummy! Letting me choose his bedding, clothes and guiding me through developing independence in his care. Your smile never faltered and I’m so grateful for your support. Leigh, thank you for being the bearer of happy news! And providing the banter I needed in those long days. We appreciate the time you spent with us, even after a huge commute every morning. There are never enough words to tell you how amazing you all are.
Dear Ann
As far as nursery staff go, we could not have wished for a more caring, patient and invested person. You helped develop Zander’s social skills, his confidence, his ‘give it a go’ attitude and his personality. You supported us in challenging times and made sure that our little boy was as ready for school as he could be. Thanks to you, he is thriving in Primary 1. He loves school, has great friendships and is just so ready! Thank you so much for all you have done.
Dear Shelley
My brilliant sister. Thank you for being the best auntie to our boy. Thank you for letting me cry when it was too much. Thank you for loving him and being desperate to meet him even though it was scary. Thank you for always being there for us, and knowing just what to say. I love you.
Thanks to Gemma Dutton for sharing Zander’s story. This blog is dedicated to the memory of Dr Menon.
